2005 Dodge Neon Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Parking Brake Cable on 2005 Dodge Neon?
A: First, block your tires so the vehicle will not move after you release the parking brake lever. Pull the parking brake lever all the way in and change the transmission into neutral. Lift open the center console by unscrewing the screws at the sides. Lift the lever handle of the parking brake downward and pull up on the parking brake lever output cable until the pin punch can push through both ends-the mechanism gear and the mounting bracket's right side. Disconnect both parking brake cables from the equalizer, take off the rear seat's cushion and fold the rear carpeting in front to access the cables at the rear floor. With a 1/2 inch wrench, squeeze in on the retainer to release it and then pull on the entire cable. Lift the vehicle and take away the rear tire and the wheel expressed as a single unit. For cars equipped with rear drum brakes, remove the brake drum from the wheel. On vehicles using disc brakes at the rear, remove the pin bolts holding the guide and the caliper and hang the caliper aside out of your way. Next, disconnect the rear brake rotor from the bearing. First, take out the dust cap from the rear hub and its bearing, then remove the nut that holds both and finally get rid of the hub and bearing. On a rear disc brake car, detach the top return spring and both holding clips, then expand the rear parking brake shoes apart to clear the anchor and remove the shoes as a set from the disc brake adapter. Remove the cable from the parking brake lever at the rear and take the actuating spring out from between the brake shoe adjustment lever and the brake shoe. Lower the parking brake cable from the back brake support plate using a 1/2 inch box wrench to separate the locking fingers of the retainer. To detach the parking brake cable in rear disc brake vehicles, remove the parking brake actuating lever and compress the locking fingers on the retainer with a 1/2 inch offset box wrench. Lastly, take the nuts and bracket off the tension strut mounting bolts and take the parking brake cable and grommet out of the car's panel under the floor.
