2005 Dodge Neon Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Tie Rod End on 2005 Dodge Neon?
A: The first step in servicing or repairing the outer tie rod is to lift the car, take out the wheel assembly and remove the tire. Loose the tie rod jam nut, slide the inner tie rod up and pull the collar off the end of the outer tie rod. Once you have done that, unscrew the nut at the end nearest the steering knuckle while keeping the tie rod stud still with your other hand. Separate the outer tie rod from the knuckles by using the Remover, Special Tool MB991113 and then remove the heat shield on the tie rod. Remove the top tie rod from the lower tie rod. During installation, put the inner tie rod into the jam nut, while the collar is meant to be on the right spot. Put the outer tie rod over the inner tie rod and then slide the collar on the end of the outer one. Insert the jam nut under the collar, but don't tighten it at this stage. Lay the tie rod heat shield on the steering arm of the knuckle, making sure the holes and tangs are in proper alignment. Put on the outer tie rod end of the spring, place the nut on the stud and hold the stud in place as you tighten the nut. Place a crowfoot wrench onto a torque wrench and tighten the nut so that it reads 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.) on the torque wrench. Take the tire and wheel assembly back off , fit it into position, tighten the wheel nut to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), then lower the vehicle and fix the front toe setting.
