2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Wheel Bearings on a 11 1/2 AA Rear Axle on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?
    A: Start by removing the shaft flange bolts and axle shaft to work on the rear axle with a 11 1/2 AA arrangement. After that, get rid of the retainer ring from the axle shaft tube and then remove the locking key from the hub bearing nut. Loosen the hub bearing nut with Socket 8954 and pry the hub and bearings from the axle afterward. Unscrew the hub bearing seal from the hubs, removing the seal totally from the axle and leaving its smaller piece still attached. Then, take out the rear bearing and the hub bearing cups with a hammer and drift. Put the outer hub bearing cup in with Installer 8961 and Handle C-4171 and then place the inner hub bearing cup in with Installer 8153 and Handle C-4171. Choose the right wheel bearing grease, stuff the bearings with it, fit the rear bearing and use Installer 8963 to set the new grease seal with Help C-4171. Put the hub onto the axle tube and then add the front bearing into the hub. Lock the hub bearing nut with Socket 8954 and tighten it to 30 Nm while the hub rotates. Back off about 30° to fit the slot on the next nut key beside the axle tube key slot. Make the end play no more than 0.25 mm and no less than 0.025 mm. At the close, add the retainer ring on the ring side to the key slot, bake it and place a fresh axle shaft gasket before installing the axle shaft.
