2005 Jeep Wrangler Air Bag Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken before servicing components related to the steering wheel and Air Bag on 2005 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Always disable the supplemental restraint system by disconnecting and isolating the battery negative cable and wait two minutes after air bag vehicles before attempting to service the steering wheel, steering column, driver air bag, passenger air bag or instrument panel related work. Because the horn switch is so important, service of the driver air bag unit should only be done by professionals to protect against unwanted air bag activation that could cause injuries. Steps should be taken to avoid placing extra materials within the driver air bag or between the air bag cushion and its trim, because this may also cause injury upon air bag deployment. The trim cover for the driver air bag should not be painted, since new replacement covers are provided in the original shade. Applying paint could change its behavior in a crash. To attend to the driver air bag trim cover or the horn switch, first disconnect the battery negative cable and let it sit for two minutes. Ensure you first remove the driver air bag from the steering wheel, turn it so that the trim cover is below and place it on a proper work surface. Take out the four nuts holding the upper and lower trim cover retainers to the driver air bag housing and remove both the retainers. Pull out the retainer on the horn switch switch pigtail wire and remove the ground pigtail wire eyelet terminal from the inflator stud. Free the trim cover locking blocks and take out the housing from the trim cover receptacle. Assembly requires you to place the driver air bag trim cover, receptacle facing up, to avoid any damage. Insert the driver air bag into the trim cover opening, making certain the horn switch wires are free of contact. Secure the trim cover locking blocks against the lip of the air bag housing. Connect the ground wire eyelet terminal to the horn switch after reset. Also, slide the retainers back on the inflator studs to make sure the tabs lock in the locking blocks. Screw the four nuts firmly to a torque of 7 N.m (60 in. lbs.), connect the horn switch feed pigtail wire connector retainer and then set the driver air bag back on the steering wheel.
