Q: How to Service and Repair Crankshaft and Main Bearings on 2006 Chrysler Crossfire?
A: Remove the upper oil pan, oil pump, rear crankshaft radial seal and timing chain and during crankshaft rotation make sure the connecting rods are not getting twisted. Mark both the connecting rod and the cap on the same side for identification, then untighten the connecting rod bolts but don't disturb the oil bearings. Get rid of the connecting rod caps with their bearings intact, then remove the connecting rods and leave the crankshaft bearing caps with marks. Work carefully to pry the crankshaft bearing caps off, then take out the crankshaft main bearing journal cap bolts, discard them as well and remove the remaining main journal cap bolts. Release the crankshaft from inside the engine and, from the crankcase and journal caps, disconnect the main bearing shells and the thrust washers. During installation, make sure to clean all journals with solvent, then dry them well before fitting the upper shells into the engine main journals and laying down the thrust washers. Brush a little oil on the bearing surfaces, fit the crankshaft into the block and then slide the lower main bearing shells into the main bearing journal caps. Before installing the crankshaft, change the main bearing journal cap M8X75 and M10X90 bolts, as fracture could occur, then add the main bearing journal cap and tighten according to this two-step sequence: for M8 bolts, apply 20 Nm first, plus a 90° clockwise rotation and for M10 bolts, use 30 Nm with the same rotation after the fixed torque. Replace connecting rod bolts that are longer than 47.6 mm, then put on the connecting rod caps and bolts as shown, next the oil pump, upper oil pan, timing chain and lastly a new crankshaft rear radial seal.
