2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Steering Knuckle on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Raise the vehicle, secure it and then get rid of the wheel mounting nuts and the whole tire and wheel assembly. Then, clear out the cotter pin, lock nut and spring washer from the bottom hub nut and, with a helper applying the brakes, take out the hub nut and washer at the axle half shaft. Loosen the outer tie rod nut, gripping the tie rod end stud with a suitable wrench and holding the knuckle part still. With GB Remover, McGill MB991113, take out the tie rod end from the knuckle and then remove the outer tie rod and heat shield. Pull the nut off the pinch bolts and get rid of the ball joint stud, doing so while leaving the bolts that attach the assembly to the knuckle alone. Firmly keep the bolt heads in place while removing the two nuts from the bolts by the strut and knuckle and then take out the bolts with a pin punch. Carefully take apart the ball joint stud from the knuckle, using the correct tool and with the halfshaft supported. Remove the outer splines of the halfshaft C/V joint and take out the knuckle from your car. If the new steering knuckle does not have a wheel bearing, put a new bearing on before you install it. Press the wheel mounting studs away from the hub flange to allow the studs to be matched with the notch in the bearing retainer plate so they can be removed. Place the bearing splitter between the hub and the bearing retainer plate and hold the steering knuckle face down in an arbor press, while taking out the hub from the bearing. Remove the bearing retainer plate first and once that's off, take out the wheel bearing from the knuckle. Should the bearing race remain on the hub, then use the bearing splitter to remove it. Clean the inside of the knuckle where the bearing fits, push in a new wheel bearing and secure the bearing retainer plate once again with the old bolts. Fit the wheel mounting studs into the hub's flange, place the knuckle back in the arbor again and push the hub into the wheel bearing. Ensure the hub moves freely before putting the knuckle onto the car. Make sure the halfshaft outer C/V joint and knuckle are clean and smear on a thin layer of grease. Fit the hub to the halfshaft's splines, set the knuckle on the ball joint stud and hold them together with a new pinch bolt and nut. Put the strut assembly into place in the knuckle and fix it using the bolts, making sure to tighten the bolts while they are not turning. Add the heat shield for the tie rod, then push and lock the outer tie rod ball stud into the knuckle arm and tighten the nut. Put back the wheel speed sensor, brake rotor, disc brake caliper and adapter into the car. Take care of any dust in the halfshaft C/V joint's threads, add a washer and the hub nut, having a helper apply the brakes as you keep tightening the nut by hand. Place the spring washer and lock nut on the device, then hook in the cotter pin. After that, fit the tire and wheel assembly, tighten the wheel mounting nuts, lower the vehicle and align the wheels as needed.
