2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Brake Booster Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Vacuum Brake Booster on a Right-Hand Drive on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: The first step for servicing or repairing the vacuum brake booster on a vehicle with the steering wheel on the right is to unclip the air cleaner cover and save it somewhere safe. Separate the battery negative cable from its mount, then you can remove the refrigerant from your air conditioning system with a recovery machine. Remove the refrigerant hoses from their connection block, located just above the engine torque strut, get them out of the way and seal all openings so nothing can enter. Remove the master cylinder and cut the vacuum hoses going to the power brake booster's check valve but don't pull out the check valve. In the vehicle, pull out the silencer pad under the knee blocker and fold down and take out the knee blocker. Turn the stop lamp switch counterclockwise about 30 degrees and pull it back to disconnect the wiring harness connector, then throw the switch away. Use a small screwdriver to rotate the tang on the retaining clip, then move the booster push rod off the brake pedal pin. Accessible from beneath the instrument panel near where the brake pedal bracket screws in, remove the four nuts attaching the power brake booster to the instrument panel. Pull the power brake booster forward until you can see that the mounting studs have cleared the dash panel and take it out from the front of the car without scratching the engine cover. Put in a new dash seal on the booster mounting studs prior to installing the power brake booster. Attach the power brake booster behind the dash panel, place the push rod and studs into the proper area and screw in all four mounting nuts to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.). Apply a layer of Mopar Lubriplate or an equivalent product to the brake pedal pin, fit the power brake booster push rod over the pin and attach it with a fresh retaining clip. Do not take out the original stop lamp switch, because it can only be adjusted once during screen installation. Articulate the plunger end of the switch into the mounting bracket, turn it clockwise to hold in place and adjust it when the brake pedal is pushed in. Again mount the knee blocker and the silencer pad, so the hoses are correctly routed to prevent getting in contact with the exhaust manifold. Attach all previous vacuum lines to the vacuum check valve, set the master cylinder back into place, remove its caps and secure the refrigerant lines with PAG oil-lubricated O-rings. Drain and charge the refrigeration unit with a recovery machine, refit the battery negative cable and fit the air cleaner cover. Getting a firm brake pedal is necessary before driving; do a road test afterward to confirm the brakes are working properly.
