2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Catalytic Converter on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Always allow the exhaust system to cool properly before working on your catalytic converter, since it gets very hot when operating. Identify the specific problem causing the failure before you replace anything, since most challenges happen with air, fuel or ignition. Take out the muffler and intermediate pipe and afterward unplug the electrical connection for the downstream oxygen sensor. Then, get rid of the catalytic converter by unfastening each bolt and throwing out the flange gasket. Check if the catalytic converter is flowing properly and examine the element within it using either a borescope or a flashlight to look for cracks or melted material. Install a fresh flange gasket when replacing the catalytic converter and screw in the bolts until the torque reads 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Once all the connections are proper and the clearances are inspected, fix the band clamps to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Do not tighten the clamp bands very tight and if the downstream oxygen sensor is now gone, be sure to reinstall it and connect its electrical connector.
