2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What is the Proper Method for Installing a Piston Ring Set on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before pulling out the lower piston rings, first expel both upper piston rings using a proper ring expander, then the upper oil ring side rail, the lower oil ring side rail and the oil ring expander until it comes out of the piston. All the carbon from the ring grooves should be cleaned. Prior to putting in the piston rings, look at the end gap with a feeler gauge. Place the upper and intermediate piston rings such that the ID mark on their faces is above the piston and the manufacturer's ID is visible from above. First, fit the oil ring expander, then add the upper oil ring side rail, then the lower oil ring side rail, next put on the No. 2 intermediate piston ring and finally, install the No. 1 upper piston ring. First place the oil ring expander followed by the upper side rail and then the lower side rail, fitting one rail end between the oil ring expander and the piston ring groove and pressing down with your hands to hold them into place. After that, you should fit your No. 2 piston ring followed by your No. 1 piston ring. Make sure the piston ring gaps are correct, with a proper difference from the oil ring expander gap which should be at least 45° from the side rail gaps, to help control the oil.
