2006 Dodge Dakota Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Can Exhaust Valves and Intake Valves Be Reworked for Optimal Maintenance on 2006 Dodge Dakota?
A: If the valves or seats become worn or burned, they can be fixed, as long as the correct seat requirements are followed; otherwise, the cylinder head has to be replaced. The right size valve guide pilot is necessary to make sure the reseating stones give a true and complete valve seat during refacing. Measure the center of the valve seat with a dial indicator to confirm that total run out is not more than 0.051 mm (0.002 inch). Place a bit of Prussian blue on the valve seat, position the valve (4) or (5) into the cylinder head and gently turn it, checking as you apply pressure. When you've removed the valve, check its face; when blue goes below the top edge, slightly lower the valve seat using a 15 degree stone and when it's above the bottom edge, raise the valve seat slightly with a 65 degree stone. The width of the intake seat must measure 1.75 - 2.36 mm (0.0689 - 0.0928 inch) and that of the exhaust seat must be 1.71 - 2.32 mm (0.0673 - 0.0911 inch) when the seat is set correctly. Refaced and installed, measure the installed height of the valve springs; for both intake and exhaust, it should not go above 40.74 mm (1.6039 inch). The valve seat and valve face should be arranged so they are both set to an angle of 44.5 - 45°.
