2006 Dodge Dakota Intake Valve Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Exhaust Valve and Intake Valves on 2006 Dodge Dakota?
A: You need to first take off the entire cylinder heads to work on the intake and exhaust valves. First, taken off the rocker arms and lash adjusters, then the camshaft bearing caps and finally the camshaft. Lay valve spring compressor C-3422-B or C-3422-C on the valve and insert its collar inside the cylinder before compressing. If the spring locks remain tight, lightly tap on the valve spring top to break them. Take out both halves of the retaining lock on the springs, using care when releasing the compressor handle because of how compressed the springs are. Then, extract the valve spring compressor, the spring retainer and the spring, examining the keeper grooves for sharp edges and smoothing the valve stem after you find any burrs. Because valve stem seals for both intake and exhaust are interchangeable, after removing one you should mark the valve it belongs to. It is a good idea to look at and test valve springs during engine maintenance every time the valves are taken out. See if there are any signs of wear or damage on the springs, then use Tool C-647 to measure spring force at test length. If a spring does not meet specifications, change it. First, coat the valve stem with clean oil and fit it into the bottom of the chamber, then slide the valve stem seal on and fix it so the seal is fully seated and the garter spring has not been damaged. After that, set the spring in place and spring retainer, compress the spring using the valve spring compressor and install the two retainer halves. Lift the compressor and make sure the halves of the retainer and spring retainer are comfortably seated. Dip the camshaft journal into some clean engine oil, insert the camshaft with the sprocket down toward the left at about 11 o'clock and to the right at 12 o'clock and place the camshaft bearing caps. Lastly, fit the retaining bolts into the camshaft bearings, tightening them in the sequence specified, to 11 Nm (100 inch lbs.) and place the hydraulic lash adjusters and rocker arms.
