2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can Exhaust Valve and Intake Valves Be Reworked to Ensure Proper Valve Seat Refacing on 2006 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Valve seats that have become worn or burned can still be repaired if the same seat angle and width are used, but if not, you have to replace the cylinder head. The proper size of the valve guide pilot is necessary when refacing valves and valve seats to level the stone to its true height. First, use a dial indicator to measure the run out of the valve seat and be sure that the maximum run out is no more than 0.051 mm (0.002 inch) from the center. Subsequently, use a very little Prussian blue on the valve seat, fit the valve inside the cylinder head and while gently pushing, turn the valve. With the valve removed, study the face; if blue appears under the top, make sure the valve seat is cut lower using a 15 degree stone and if it appears at the bottom edge, use a 65 degree stone to make the valve seat rise. A correctly positioned seat should show intake seat width within 1.75 - 2.36 mm (0.0689 to 0.0928 inch) and exhaust seat width within 1.71 - 2.32 mm (0.0673 to 0.0911 inch). Following refacing, measure the installed height of all valve springs and make sure it remains under 40.74 mm (1.6039 inch). It is important that the face angle for valve seat and valve face lands between 44.5 - 45°.
