2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Oil Pan Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Oil Pan on 2006 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Disconnect the negative battery cable and then install engine support fixture special tool #8534 without lifting the engine before repairing or servicing the oil pan. No need to remove the engine mount bolts on the left and right; just loosen them, then remove the structural dust cover if you have one. Take out the engine oil and pull out the front crossmember. With tool 8534, gently raise the engine so that the oil pan can be taken out and the fan shroud to fan and cowl to intake manifold keep their proper clearance. Do not handle the oil pan or the gasket under it, because the gasket is attached to the engine windage tray and will not separate. Unbolt the mounting bolts for the oil pan and remove the pan and after that, unbolt the oil pump pickup tube. Have the integral windage tray and gasket inspected and replace either one if it is necessary. Clean the oil pan in solvent and dry it with a clean cloth, so that the oil pan gasket surface is not damaged by tools like abrasives. Rinse all the parts in strong alcohol to completely clean them out. Check the drain plug and plug hole for signs of damage, repair it if needed and also check for shape changes in the mounting flange on the oil pan. Before installation, wipe the oil pan gasket mating surface of the bed plate and oil pan, examine the integrated oil pan gasket and fit a new one when appropriate. Place the integrated oil pan gasket/windage tray assembly, install the oil pickup tube and attach it with bolts and nuts tightened to 28 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Should you take out the stud, install it at position No. 9, then set the oil pan in its place and link it to the block with the bolts and nut, but only finger-tighten. Start by lowering the engine into the mounts, using the special tool 8534. Next, put both engine mount bolts in the mounts and tighten them to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). Take out special tool 8534, fit the structural dust cover if your car has it and finally set the front crossmember in place. Pour oil into the engine, secure the negative battery cable, turn on the engine and see if there are any leaks.
