2007 Dodge Ram 1500 Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace Exhaust Valve and Intake Valves in a Cylinder Head on 2007 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: You have to take off the cylinder heads before you can remove or put in a new valve. Remove the rocker arms, lash adjusters and then the camshaft bearings, along with the camshaft. Insert Special Tool 8519 Adapter between the retainer and valve spring to press down the spring and then tap the top of the spring if needed to loosen the locking tabs and pull out the retainer. Gently take out each half of the lock, making certain to handle the valve spring with caution while the compressor is releasing tension. You should then pull the spring tainer and spring out before checking the keeper grooves for sharpness and removing any burrs from the valve stem before you pull out the valve head. Since the valve stem seals are identical for intake and exhaust, you should remove and mark the valve as you prepare it. Checking and testing valve springs should be done each time the valves are taken off. See if the valve springs show any signs of wearing out and use tool C-647 to set the tone device by having its surface line up with the threaded stud's 40.12 mm (1.579 in.) mark and its zero mark. Cover the stud with the spring and depress the lever, then pull the torque wrench so it makes a ping and note what the reading says. To find the spring load at the measurement you are using, multiply the reading by two and adjust finer values according to the information on the table. Look at the specifications to find out what height and tensions are needed, then substitute springs that don't meet these specifications.
