2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Exhaust Valve and Intake Valves on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: For both the intake and exhaust valves, you need to take off the heads, the rocker arms and lash adjusters and finally the camshaft bearing caps and camshaft. Use Special Tool C-3422-B or C-3422-C Valve Spring Compressor and Special Tool 8519 Adapter to compress the valve spring, tapping its top to unlock the lock halves and allow for their removal. Don't release the valve spring compressor until you are sure the spring is safe and relaxed. Once the spring retainer and the spring are taken out, look for burrs in the keeper grooves and then remove any from the valve stem. The seals on the valve stems can be used the same way whether for intake or exhaust, so note where you remove each one for reinstallation. You should always check and test the valve springs when removing the valves, just in case you want to use them. If you find any damage or wear, measure the spring's load at test length and change out any spring that fails the test. For mounting the valve, put engine oil on the valve stem and drop it into the cylinder head, so that the seal fits snugly and the garter spring is undamaged. Place the spring on the valve and use the compressor to lower both halves of the valve spring retainer over the ends of the spring. Let the spring free when both spring retainers are seated in place. Oil the camshaft journal with pure engine oil, place the camshaft so the sprocket dowel is at 11 o'clock for the left camshaft and 12 o'clock for the right camshaft and then position the camshaft bearing caps. Secure the camshaft bearing cap with the retaining bolts after which tighten them to 9 - 13 Nm (100 inch lbs.), turning each bolt in halves, as suggested by the service manual and position both the hydraulic lash adjuster and rocker arms.
