2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Knock Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Remove and Reinstall a Left Knock Sensor on 2006 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: You'll notice that the left knock sensor is identified with an LEFT tag and has a bigger bolt head; it is key that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) picks up the right position to keep left and right settings separate. Before removing the two knock sensors from the cylinder block under the intake manifold, unplug the knock sensor dual pigtail harness from the engine wiring harness at the back of the engine. Then remove the intake manifold and unbolt the air pressure sensors, because the foam strip exists only for use during plant assembly and not as a sealant and no sealant should be allowed to stick on these bolts. Once the sensors are removed, clean all the holes in the engine where the knock sensors mounted, before putting them back in place. It matters that the sensor mounting bolts are neither too loose nor too tight, as this can lead to poor performance and possibly to the engine firing late or early. Therefore, always tighten the sensor fitment bolts to 20 N.m (176 in.lbs.) which feels lighter than it is when the bolts are 8 mm in diameter. When you finish, place back the intake manifold and join the knock sensor wiring harness to the engine harness on the back of the intake manifold.
