2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install an Ignition Coil on 2006 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: One ignition coil is attached to each spark plug, fit into machined places in the head and held into place by a mounting stud/nut to the intake manifold top. The base of the coil has a rubber boot around it that seals the spark plug, containing a spring that contacts the ignition system and cannot be serviced apart from the coil. At the head of the cylinder, an O-ring seals off the space at the top of the coil. Often, you will need to remove the tube or box of the throttle body air intake system to access the coil. Grab the connector with the coil and press down on the lock, then pull it off. Use compressed air to clean the section around the coil base before you begin to remove the mounting nut. Slowly twist and pull the coil out of the opening in the cylinder head. Before placing the plug, blow away any dirt with compressed air, around where it connects to the top of the spark plug. A best practice is to dab some silicone on the O-ring of the ignition coil to make it easier to install into the opening, then press the coil into the cylinder head and guide its base over the mounting stud. Mount the stud nut for the coil to its spot and tighten it to 8 N.m (70 in.lbs) and then hook the electrical connector into place on the coil. If the air tube comes loose, put it back into place.
