2006 Jeep Wrangler Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Front Disc Brake Caliper on 2006 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Bring the car up, support it well and proceed to remove the front wheel and tire so you can reach the caliper. Take out a little brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir using a suction gun. Use a C-clamp to hold the caliper piston at the bottom of the bore, set the clamp screw on the outboard brake shoe and place the frame on the back of the caliper, making sure the clamp screw doesn't touch the outboard spring for the shoe retainer. Start by removing the brake hose bolt, tossing away the washers and then move on to the caliper mounting bolts. If you need to, lift the top of the caliper outward with a pry tool and take it off the car. Once you're installing the drums, wipe the brake mounts with a wire brush and add a thin layer of Mopar multi-mileage grease. Put the notches of the brake shoes just towards the front on the bottom ledge, swing the caliper off the rotor and seat the notches of the shoes toward the back on its top ledge. Use silicone grease on the caliper mounting bolts before putting them in and tightening them to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.). If new bolts are being fitted or the issue needed fixing was drag/pull, it's important to ensure the caliper bolts do not extend beyond 67.6 mm (2.66 in.). Add new seal washers to the end of the brake hose and connect it to the caliper, tightening the bolt of the fitting until it reaches 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). When doing so, be sure the hose has not been twisted or bent. Drain your brake lines, set the wheel and tire in place, disassemble any support and lift off the cover for lowering the vehicle. Use only clean brake fluid or brake clean to wipe down the caliper and pistons, removing excess fluid with lint-free towels or low-pressure compressed air, since use of gasoline, kerosene, paint thinner and similar liquids could harm the piston and seal. Check that the phenolic resin piston is clear of cracks and smoothe and change it if there are any flaws; do not sand or polish the piston if it is scored.
