2006 Jeep Wrangler Dimmer Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service a Dimmer Switch on 2006 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before touching the combination switch on any vehicle with air-bags, turn off the air bag system by isolating the negative battery cable and wait two minutes to allow the air bag system capacitor to discharge so there is no accidental triggering and possible injuries. Take out the opening cover on the instrument panel first and then unscrew the two screws holding the bottom shroud to the top shroud. If the steering wheel tilts, fully lower it and keep the lever in the released mode. Take off the upper and lower shrouds from the steering column and separate the cross body wire harness connector for the left multi-function switch. Next step, separate the cross body wire harness connector for the right multi-function switch and then get rid of the two screws that hold the multifunction switch to the upper steering column housing. After detaching the two small screws holding the right switch in place, pull the control stalk to separate the alignment pins from the left switch bracket and remove the entire right switch. After that, take out the combination flasher from the rear connector on the left multi-function switch. Put the combination flasher into the left multi-function switch, then push the right switch to its left and rotate it to line up the flasher with the alignment pins. Attach the multi-function switch to the base mount cover with screws tightened to 2 Nm (17 in. lbs.) and position the assembly on the upper steering column cover by screwing it on so the screws are tightened to 2 Nm (17 in. lbs.). Attach the wires from the cross body harness protruding from both multi-function switches, snap on the upper and lower shrouds on the steering column, make sure to engage the tabs and secure the lower shroud to the upper shroud with a 2 Nm (17 in. lb.) torque on the screws. Adjust the steering position by raising it on its tilt and secure it, put the steering column covering in place and link the negative battery cable once more.
