2007 Dodge Ram 1500 Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Check and Install a Piston Ring Set on 2007 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before reinstalling used rings or installing new rings, check the ring clearances by wiping the cylinder bore clean and inserting the ring in the cylinder bore, ensuring the ring gap measurement is made with the ring positioned at least 12mm (0.50 inch) from the bottom of the cylinder bore. Slide down the piston to square the ring inside the cylinder, then read the ring's end gap with a feeler gauge. Any ring that does not meet the specification needs to be changed. Before measuring the ring side clearance, make certain the piston ring grooves are clean and that the feeler gauge slides in well between the two. Also, change any ring that is not a good fit. Rotate the ring around the piston while checking that it moves comfortably in the groove. The shapes of the Number 1 and Number 2 piston rings aren't the same, so set the No. 2 ring with its manufacturer's I.D. mark (Dot) facing toward the top of the piston. The order of installation is oil ring expander, upper oil ring side rail, lower oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and No. 1 upper piston ring. Put in the oil ring expander, then seat one end of the upper rail into the piston ring groove and next to the expander, pushing it down until it is fixed and finish with the same process on the lower side rail. Apply your piston ring installer to place the No. 2 intermediate piston ring and the No. 1 upper piston ring. The expander ring gap must be at least 45° away from the side rail gaps and not set on the piston pin center or the thrust direction.
