2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Perform a Fluid and Automatic Transmission Filter Service for a Transaxle on 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: To find the right time for fluid and filter service, refer to the vehicle owner's manual for transaxle maintenance schedules. Change the filter at the same time the transmission oil is changed and be sure to wipe out the magnet in the oil pan with a clean cloth. When the transaxle is apart, empty and replace the fluid and replace the filter. Start with putting the car up on a hoist and putting a container below the transaxle oil pan to catch the oil. Turn the pan bolts counterclockwise, tap the one corner to make the fluid come out and remove the oil pan. While the metal valve body is out, fit a new filter and O-ring to the body and also fit a new O-ring to the bottom, clean the oil pan and magnet, reinstall the pan and tighten the bolts to 19 Nm (165 in. lbs. or 165 lb-ft) with Mopar Silicone Adhesive adhering the pan. Open the dipstick opening and put in four quarts of Mopar® ATF+4, then run the engine for a minute without moving it. Apply your parking and service brakes first, then put the selector into each position briefly before leaving it in park or neutral. After checking how much oil is in the vehicle's transaxle, add enough to fill it 3 mm (1/8 in.) below the lowest mark on the dipstick. After that, let the transaxle reach 82°C before checking the fluid level again. (180°F). Be sure the dipstick is securely in place so dirt stays out of the transaxle. Before using the dipstick tube fluid suction method, guarantee the transaxle has reached its operating temperature, use the proper suction device and make sure you insert the line into the dipstick tube so it goes to the bottom of the transaxle oil pan for complete oil suction. When you empty the previous fluid, put the suction valve back, pour four quarts of ATF+4 in, begin running the engine, then repeat the steps to measure the level and make any needed adjustments.
