2008 Chrysler Town & Country Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2008 Chrysler Town & Country?
A: If necessary, put on the outer tie rods after counting the number of turns it took to remove them to maintain the same toe before confirming the alignment. Secure the tie rod jam nuts at both the top and bottom of the rack and pinion, but don't tighten them at this point. Make sure the power rack and pinion is set inside the left wheel before you fix it into place. Figuring out the center of travel, place the intermediate shaft extension against the rack and pinion shaft and fit it on. Put a pinch bolt into the intermediate shaft extension and tighten it to 42 Nm (31 ft. lbs.). Then add the dust shield to the pinch bolt and rack and pinion shaft. Place the rack and pinion mounting bosses where the crossmember holes are and attach two bolts by tightening each to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). Attach the return hose to the rack and pinion port and tighten the nut to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). Do this again with the pressure hose. For safety, look at each cushion and link for signs of wear and change any that are not working well. After confirming the stabilizer bar's correct position, push one end up through the driver side wheel housing so that the ends go over the tie rods and the bar is centered above the suspension crossmember. Slide the two cushions onto the stabilizer bar and attach them with two stabilizer bushing retainers, tightening the screws to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.). Install the pressure hose routing clamp on the back of the crossmember and tighten the screw to 8 Nm (71 in. lbs.). Set up the rear engine mount, lay the heat shield over the rack and pinion, hold it in place with screws and push-pins and tighten the screws to 8 Nm (71 in. lbs.). The fore-aft crossmember goes in the engine compartment. Hold the mounting bolts in place and fasten them, tightening the front bolt to 113 Nm and the back bolts to 55 Nm. Before connecting the engine, set up the front engine mount thru-bolt with a torque of 57 Nm (42 ft. lbs.). Screw on a new nut onto the outer tie rod stud and tighten it to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.), then rotate it an extra 245° in each direction. Fit a stabilizer bar link at one end of the bar, then at the other, tightening both nuts to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.) and holding down the lower stud. Attach the tire and wheel to each side, applying 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) with all wheel mounting nuts threaded properly. Drop the car, hook up the negative battery cable, take out the steering wheel remover, fill and bleed the power steering, look for leaks and change the toe by aligning the wheels as required.
