2009 Chrysler Town & Country Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2009 Chrysler Town & Country?
A: If required, fit the outer tie rods onto the inner tie rod threads, turning them the same number of rotations as during removal to get a rough idea for toe alignment before alignment. Put the tie rod jam nuts on each end but hold off on tightening them yet. Put the power rack and pinion into the left wheel space and begin mounting it correctly. Find where the power rack and pinion operates at its center and line up the extension piece of the intermediate shaft with the shaft in the rack and pinion travel zone. Eyenail the intermediate shaft extension with the pinch bolt and tighten it to a torque of 42 Nm. Slide the dust shield on top of the pinch bolt and rack and pinion shaft. Place the rack and pinion onto the bosses so they fit over the crossmember and install the bolts, turning them 120 Nm. Put the return hose into the power rack and pinion port, secure it with a torque of 31 Nm and repeat for the pressure hose. Prior to fitting the stabilizer bar, check the condition of cushions and links and make sure both ends of the bar face down under the rack and pinion tie rods. Thread the stabilizer bar into the driver side wheel opening so that it is parallel to the suspension crossmember. Place the two cushions on the stabilizer bar and hold them there using the two retainers, then firm them with the screws set to 45 Nm. Secure the power steering pressure hose routing clamp in the back of the crossmember and tighten the screw to 8 Nm. Next, install the rear engine mounting bracket and slide the heat shield over the rack and pinion, attaching it with screws and push-pins and tightening the screws to 8 Nm. The fore-aft crossmember goes in the engine compartment and you should secure it with bolts, holding the front one at 113 Nm and the rear two at 55 Nm. Place and fasten the front engine mount thru-bolt, making the tightening force 57 Nm. Fit the outer tie rod to each knuckle, install a new nut onto the rod stud, tighten it to 75 Nm, then turn it 245° further. Link the stabilizer bar link at the end of the stabilizer bar on each side, holding the lower stud in place and tightening the nuts to 88 Nm. Put the tire and wheel on each side, then tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm in the right order. Remove the negative cable from the battery, then lift the front of the vehicle, disconnect the steering wheel because it's not adjustable, bleed the power steering system, look for leaks and perform a wheel alignment to set the toe.
