2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Piston Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install Piston Assemblies into the Bore on 2008 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before you put in the piston and the connecting rod, install the piston rings into the bore. Soak the top of the piston and the ring assembly in clean engine oil, then fit a ring compressor over them to keep the rings from moving. Put the bearing in place on the connecting rod so that the bearing's hole is lined up with the rod's hole and afterwards lubricate the bearing surface using clean engine oil. Upload Special Tool 8507 connecting rod guides into the connecting rod threads. You will notice a raised "F" mark on the piston pin bore surface of each piston and this label points forward on each bank and the connecting rod oil slinger slot should be in the same position. Wash the cylinder with a degreaser, then oil it fully with motor oil. Keep turning the crankshaft so the connecting rod journal is in the middle of the cylinder bore. Then set the rod and piston in the bore and place the connecting rod guides on top of the journal. Push the piston down into the bore with a hammer handle and hold the rod on the journal as you go. Connecting Rod Bolts come from the Torque to Yield category and should always be replaced if they are taken out. Apply engine oil to the connecting rod bolts and bearings, set the connecting rod cap and bearing in place and tighten the bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) plus 90°. Fit in the cylinder head(s), timing chain and cover, cylinder head covers and oil pan together with gasket or windage tray. Put the correct engine oil into the crankcase until it reaches the right level and secure the battery with the negative cable.
