2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Crankshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Properly Install and Seal a Crankshaft on 2008 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before you install the tone wheel retaining screws, spread sealant onto them. Apply clean engine oil on the crankshaft upper bearing halves, place the crankshaft tone wheel in place and tighten its mounting screws to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.). Fit the crankshaft into the cylinder block and add the thrust washers as you do so. Use Mopar® Engine RTV sealant to coat the joint between the bedplate and cylinder block to help stop serious oil leaks and guarantee clean surfaces. Use a 2.5mm (0.100 inch) bead of Mopar® Engine RTV sealant on the spot where the cylinder block and bedplate meet. Coat the cylinder block's crank main journals with clean engine oil and put the bedplate on. Before fastening the bedplate, coat the bolts with a bit of engine oil. Place the bedplate retaining bolts, keeping stud bolts in the proper position and first tighten bolts 1D, 1G and 1F by hand so the bedplate presses against the block, then tighten bolts 1A - 1J to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), bolts 1 - 8 to 7 Nm (5 ft. lbs.), turn bolts 1 - 8 another 90° and finally tighten bolts A - E to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Measuring crankshaft end play, putting in the connecting rods and checking their clearance areas are important next steps. Place the oil pump and then put in the engine.
