2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How Is the Left Camshaft Installed on 2008 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft journals before placing the camshaft in position, so its sprocket dowel is beside the 1 o'clock marker, making installation of the bearing caps easier. After that, fit the camshaft into the cylinder head and put on the bearing caps, tightening them by hand and checking that the numbers on the caps run in sequence from front to back and the arrows point to the front of the engine. Tighten the bolts that hold the bearing cap, turning them in 1/2 increments, beginning with the middle cap and working to the outer caps, so they reach a torque of 11 Nm (100 in. lbs.). Line up the V6 label on the camshaft drive gear with the two marked chain links when putting the gear on the timing chain. Put the Camshaft Holder 8428 over the camshaft and keep turning it until the sprocket dowel and the sprocket slot are in line, then attach the sprocket to the camshaft. Clean up any oil that is dripping from the sprocket bolt and then tighten the retaining bolt by hand. When you are done using Wedge Locking Tool 8379, tighten the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt with Spanner Wrench 6958 and adapter pins 8346 to 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.). The last step is to install the cylinder head cover.
