2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Piston Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace a Piston's Connecting Rod on 2009 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Remove the negative cable from the battery before you take out and replace the connecting rod. After that, take out the oil pan and gasket/windage tray, cylinder head covers, timing chain cover and the cylinder head(s). Use a suitable ridge-removal tool to reduce the peak of each cylinder's bore before taking out the pistons, while still keeping the tops of the pistons covered. All the pistons and connecting rods should be lifted out from the cylinder block's top, as the crankshaft moves and positions each connecting rod in the center of its cylinder. Make sure not to punch or stamp numbers onto the connecting rods or caps, to prevent any damage. Make marks on the position of the connecting rods and bearing caps using a permanent marker or a scribe, ensuring you don't harm the cracked rod and cap surfaces. Remove the cap on the connecting rod, install the Connecting Rod Guides 8507 in the rod's bore and remove the piston from the cylinder. Perform this with each connecting rod and piston. While turning the crankshafts, care should be taken to avoid making small cuts in the journals. Take the piston and connecting rod out, then quickly put the new bearing cap on the connecting rod so the crack in the old cap and rod doesn't spread.
