2008 Dodge Sprinter 2500 Piston Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Install a Piston and Connecting Rod on 2008 Dodge Sprinter 2500?
A: Begin by putting the piston rings onto the piston and then install the piston and connecting rod once you have checked the bolts of the connecting rod bearing cap for any necking. If you find connecting rod bolts that are more than 40.5 mm (1.590 in.) long, replace them. When inserting the walnut pieces and piston, make sure the gaps in the compression rings do not match the position of the oil ring rail. Soak both the piston head and rings in engine oil, fit the ring compressor around the piston and use the special wrench to make sure the rings are not moved from their places. After adding rod bolt protectors, turn the crankshaft to put the connecting rod journal in the center of the cylinder bore. Place the cylinder bore over the crankshaft journal, putting both the rod and piston inside it, so that the piston moves forward in the cylinder and the squirt hole of the connecting rod is against the major thrust side of the cylinder. Push down the piston into the cylinder bore using a hammer handle as you line up the connecting rod on the connecting rod journal. First, install the rod caps, then put in the pre-cleaned and inspected connecting rod bolts, tightening them to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) and adding one more 1/4 turn. After all, add the upper oil pan, lower oil pan, right cylinder head and left cylinder head if they are required.
