2008 Dodge Viper Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install the Timing Chain on a Crankshaft Sprocket on 2008 Dodge Viper?
A: Place a replacement sprocket on the crankshaft and point the timing mark out, before aligning the crankshaft keyway with where the key should go on the sprocket. Apply a tiny amount of Mopar(R) Nickel Anti-seize Compound or a similar substance to the threads of crankshaft sprocket installer 9055 before installing it. Add the crankshaft sprocket using installer 9055A by pushing it into the crankshaft tilting flange. Put the crankshaft sprocket in the position when the timing mark is at twelve o'clock and then install the timing chain on the camshaft sprocket so that its mark is at six o'clock. Then, place the timing chain around the crankshaft sprocket and quickly install the camshaft sprocket. Make sure that the timing marks are lined up with a straight edge. Insert the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt and then tighten it to 160 Nm or 118 ft. lbs. Insert the camshaft phaser driveshaft and rotate it anti-clockwise so the slot is pointing at the 12 O'clock position. Make sure to turn the crankshaft for two revolutions so that the timing marks match. If they don't, take out the cam sprocket and adjust it until all the marks are in line. Place the camshaft phaser plate and retaining bolts and torque the drive plate bolts to 12 Nm (106 in. lbs.), as well as the camshaft phaser bolt to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.). Lastly, set the timing chain cover into place.
