2008 Jeep Wrangler Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Remove and Replace an Air Bag on 2008 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before replacing the air bag driver, turn off the SRS by disconnecting and isolating the battery negative cable, then wait two minutes for the capacitor to empty. Protect yourself from irritants on the air bag cushion by wearing rubber gloves, goggles and a long-sleeved shirt. If the air bag doesn't work or is damaged but isn't deployed, use the guide for handling non-deployed supplemental restraints. After an air bag is deployed, check the service guidelines for that air bag before you remove it. Pull the steering column all the way down so you can reach the driver air bag more easily. Look at yourself with a tiny mirror if you think it would help. Turn the steering wheel twice so that each of the air bag retainer access holes points toward the twelve o'clock spot. Place the short, flat-tipped screwdriver into an access hole above, set the blade on the inner wire loop, twist the driver to release the snap and slowly pull the driver air bag away from the steering wheel. This needs to be repeated for the other upper hole and then for the lower hole and make sure the lower snap retainer wire loop is marked with a V-shape. After taking the driver air bag away from the steering wheel, stop pulling on the pigtail wires and keep away from the connector insulator as you access the connections in the back of the air bag housing. You should remove the air bag inflator connector's insulators after taking the lock of the Clock Spring driver air bag pigtail wires straight out. The last part is to remove the bag from the steering wheel. An air bag deployment activates the Clock Spring, so it has to be replaced.
