2009 Dodge Challenger Sway Bar Kit Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Sway Bar Kit for Rear Suspension on 2009 Dodge Challenger?
A: When starting to install the sway bar kit, first add isolators to it and have the slits in the bushings point forward and the flat side towards the crossmember. Then, secure retainers onto the posts and lift the bar with isolators and retainers to the position beneath the crossmember. Affix the isolator retainer bracket bolts without fully tightening them, then put in the bolt and nut joining the sway bar to each link bar, but don't tighten those yet. Tighten the isolator retainer mounting bolts until the wrench reads 61 Nm or 45 ft. lbs. Pull out the coil springs with isolators from the spring links, lift the crossmember to the mounting points on the body, add the shaft to the rear axle so it sits on the differential flange and then insert the shocks into their pockets in the spring links. Remember, the longer rear mounting bolts should never go in the front side. Go on raising the crossmember until the bolts can be installed, fastening the left bolts only loosely. Take care when releasing the jack so the right side of the crossmember goes down a little, so the springs are positioned to fit with the isolators completely installed on each end. Attach the coil spring to the spring pocket, positioning it close to the body mount and raise the jack to both the coil spring and shock to your target assembly location, stopping when the hole of the shock absorber matches the spring link. Put the lower shock mounting bolt and nut into the car, but do not tighten them yet. Where AWD is present, attach spacers to the top part of the right crossmember mount bushings, lifting the crossmember afterward. Move the crossmember to the correct spot on the right and install the bolts loosely until it meets the engine. Unscrew the left side crossmember mounting bolts, then use the jack to lower that part so the spring isolators can be fitted correctly during spring setup. For the left side shock assembly, insert the coil spring and shock absorber, guide them until in place, insert the lower mount bolt and start the nut without tightening. If your crawler has AWD, first put spacers on top of the left crossmember mount bushings before you lift it into place. Bring the left side of the crossmember up and tighten the bolts. Adjust the crossmember so the mounts are lined up with the marks on the body, then check that the space between the tension link and the weld flange on the body is at least 12 mm. Should the distance require adjustment, do so to the rear crossmember and afterward, secure all four crossmember mounting bolts to 180 Nm (133 ft. lbs.). Take the jack out from below the rear axle differential and the bungee holding up the propeller shaft. Place the shaft index markers together and place all coupler-to-axle flange bolts and nuts using a torque of 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.). Attach the fuel filler tube again, clip the left rear wheel speed sensor cable where it belongs and fasten the sensor to the right socket. Place the speed sensor connectors onto the connector in the body wiring harness and check that the retaining clip has grabbed them. When attaching caliper guide pin bolts, first remove any dirt from the threads and then use Mopar(R) Lock & Seal Adhesive. For standard or premium disc brakes, place caliper guide pins in the caliper adapter, drop the caliper through the rear suspension and fasten it above the pads, lining up the holes with the pins and tighten bolts to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). Make sure the brake hose is properly fixed in its path. When you use SRT8 disc brakes, grab the spring link, place the caliper with pads onto the rotor and mount it on the car by putting in the four bolts and tightening them down to 130 Nm (96 ft. lbs.). Get rid of the jack from supporting the spring link, line up the parking brake cable bracket, send the parking brake cable above the rear crossmember and join the front parking brake cable to the right rear parking brake cable. Refit the back exhaust and the tire and wheel components and tighten the nuts on the wheels to 150 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) or 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.) for police models. Lower the car so the back wheels are barely touching the floor, push down the parking brake lever, then look and see if the rear wheels turn with the lever on. Lower the car all the way, firmly attach the negative battery cable, pump the brake a few times and set the vehicle on an alignment stand. Screw the lower shock mount bolt nuts down to 72 Nm (53 ft. lbs.) and the sway bar link fasteners to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.), before doing a wheel alignment with an emphasis on the thrust angle.
