2009 Dodge Viper Crankshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How is a Crankshaft Installed in an Engine on 2009 Dodge Viper?
A: First, drop the cleaned upper main bearing shells with their bearing tangs fitting into the machined grooves inside the engine block. Pour clean engine oil into the upper main bearing shells and then set the clean crankshaft in place. After that, put in new lower main bearing shells inside the main bearing caps and cover them with clean engine oil. Put each main bearing cap in the correct order according to the manual and then fasten each bolt just enough so it does not come loose. Install the main bearing cap bolts as shown, tighter side first, to a torque of 20 Nm (15 ft. lb.), operated from the suggested place, then swing the crank to the rear by 10 degrees and the front by 20 degrees and use an appropriate tool to hold it forward. Tighten the bolts in the main bearing cap up to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.), then again to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) and finally turn each bolt an extra 50° past tight. Bolt the main bearing cap bolts in steps, tightening them from 1-12 to 13 Nm (115 in. lbs.) and then to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.); after that tighten them by 45° more. Take out the crankshaft holding tool and install clean connecting rod bearings into the connecting rods, then add the rods caps. Set the crankshaft rear oil seal retainer in place and tighten the rear seal adapter retaining bolts to 11 Nm (95 in. lbs.), following the recommended sequence. Next, place in the timing chain, timing chain cover and crankshaft oil scraper, so the arrow faces the engine's front and then tighten the nuts to 23 Nm (200 in. lbs.). Once you have the swinging oil pick-up, oil pan and gasket, crankshaft damper and pulley, fit the engine assembly to your vehicle.
