2009 Dodge Viper Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Timing Cover on 2009 Dodge Viper?
A: Before attaching the engine timing cover, clean the matching faces on the chain case cover and cylinder block using a plastic scraper and the Mopar(R) Brake Parts Cleaner. Check the timing chain cover, make sure everything is properly aligned and if the gasket (2) is old, replace it. Place gasket (2) onto the timing chain cover (1) groove and then put oil into the oil pump to prime it prior to installing. Line up the mating flats on the oil pump inner rotor with those on the crankshaft before installing the timing chain cover, as this will prevent serious problems. Begin by hand starting bolts #1 and #2, then attach and hand tighten the A/C compressor mounting bracket (2) bolts and finally the last timing chain cover bolts. Place all the timing chain cover bolts at 28 Nm (248 in.lbs.) and apply 29 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) to the mounting bolts on the A/C compressor bracket. First, put in the front crankshaft oil seal, lift up the vehicle using a hoist and inspect the O-rings at the end of the oil tubes (1). If the O-rings are damaged, change them. Place the oil pick-up tube onto the pump and attach the tube with the bolts. Secure the tube with 28 Nm (248 in. lbs.) and make sure it can move; if not, loosen the mounting bolts and try again. Fit the oil pan and drain plug, put the vehicle on the ground and tighten the compressor mounting bolts to 23 Nm (200 in. lbs.). Next, join the oil cooler line and heater hose and go on to mount the crankshaft damper (2) and pulley. Attach the hose the coolant bottle inlet goes into the feeding tube at the thermostat casing next. Then, mount the generator and secure all electrical connections and after that connect the ECT sensor harness that runs from the inlet to the thermostat housing. Install the bolts for the power steering pump, put on the accessory drive belt and fit the upper and lower radiator hoses. Attach the front strut tower to tower brace and the air cleaner housing assembly to your engine. Change the oil filter, add oil to the crankcase to the right amount, finish filling the cooling system, clip on the negative battery wire, install the battery cover and close the lid to the trunk.
