2008 Dodge Viper Crankshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How is a Crankshaft Installed in an Engine on 2008 Dodge Viper?
A: When putting in the crankshaft, make sure to set in both upper main bearing shells first and rub clean engine oil on them. After that, fit the crankshaft and insert the lower main bearing shells into their main bearing caps. Don't forget to also coat the shells with clean engine oil. Put each main bearing cap where it belongs and turn all bolts a quarter turn. After that, torque main bearing cap bolts 1-12 to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) Then, move the crankshaft to its furthest rear and front positions to line up the thrust bearings and wedge appropriate tooling in between the cylinder block rear and the rear crankshaft counterweight to keep the crankshaft up front. Follow this by securing the main bearing cap bolts in the specified order, first setting them to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) and then again to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.); then fasten the main bearing cap side bolts following the same order, but tighter: first 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) and then 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Remove the crankshaft holding tool and, before putting in the new connecting rod bearings and rod caps, apply clean engine oil to the connecting rod bolt threads and tighten the bolts to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) +45°. When installing the oil pump pick-up tube, use a brand-new o-ring on the extension, tighten the 1/4-20 bolt to 11 Nm (95 in. lbs.) and use 23 Nm (200 in. lbs.) torque on the 5/16-18 nut. After that, insert the retainer for the rear oil seal on the crankshaft and tighten each rear seal adapter retaining bolt to 11 Nm (95 in. lbs.), observing the correct sequence. Then, replace the timing chain, place the crankshaft oil scraper with the arrow in front of the engine, tighten the nuts to 23 Nm (200 in. lbs.) and set up the oil pump swinging pick-tube and its new o-rings. After that, set the timing chain cover, oil pan, crankshaft damper and pulley into place before assembling the engine.
