2009 Jeep Commander Ball Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Front Suspension Upper Ball Joint on 2009 Jeep Commander?
A: Before tackling the front suspension upper ball joint, lift the car, stabilize the axle and take off the tire and wheel. After that, unscrew the retaining nut holding the upper ball joint and use tool 8677 to remove the upper ball joint from the knuckle. Pull the knuckle away so you can insert the ball joint removal tool. As you install a new ball joint, be sure not to break the rubber grease boot. To improve the ball joint tool's fit for removal, take off the rubber grease boot from the ball joint in the control arm first. Consistently using heavy grease on the tool's screw sections will help it run smoothly, remain operable and last longer. Use special tools C-4212F and 9652 to press the ball joint from the upper control arm.
