2009 Jeep Liberty Timing Chain Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace a Timing Chain and Sprockets on 2009 Jeep Liberty?
A: You need to first separate from the battery cable and release all the water or coolant within the cooling system to replace the timing chain and sprockets. Following that, take out the covers for the right and left cylinder heads, then the radiator fan shroud. Move the engine while watching the timing mark on the crankshaft damper until it lines up with the TDC mark on the timing chain cover and remember the camshaft sprocket marks are exactly at 12 o'clock during the No. 1 TDC exhaust stroke. Uncover the chain guide fasteners by first removing the pump from the steering and taking out the caps from the cylinder head vents on each side. Unleash tension on the drive belt, remove the tensioner mount and dismantle the oil fill cap for entry into that area. Collapse the main tensioner and aide it with a pin, ensuring the oil pan cover is in place. With the tensioner pinned, take both remaining tensioners out and then take out the bolt holding the sensor, being careful to keep the camshaft wheel intact. Don't rotate the camshafts or crankshaft separately to keep their parts from being damaged. Detach the left and right bolts holding the sprockets together, then while using Camshaft Holder 8428A, twist the left camshaft around 15 degrees clockwise and remove the left camshaft sprocket. For the right camshaft, rotate it about 45 degrees counterclockwise to where it is neutral. With the bolt out, slide the idler sprocket assembly and crank sprocket together forward so that the primary and secondary chains can be removed. At last, remove the main chain tensioner and both the pivoting tensioner arms and chain guides.
