2010 Jeep Liberty Timing Chain Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a Timing Chain and Its Sprockets on 2010 Jeep Liberty?
A: You should start by removing the negative battery cable and emptying the cooling system to proceed with timing chain and sprocket replacement. After that, open the right and left cylinder head covers and then disconnect the radiator fan shroud. Adjust the engine until the timing mark on the crankshaft damper faces the same timing mark on the cover, ensuring the camshaft sprocket at 12 o'clock marks the TDC exhaust stroke of No. 1 cylinder. Lift out the power steering pump and pull out the access plugs from the left and right cylinder heads to fix the chain guide fixtures. Set aside the oil fill housing, detach the fastener on the tensioner arm's right side and then remove the crankshaft damper and timing chain cover. Secure the primary chain tensioner with a pin, making sure the oil pan opening is not exposed, so nothing falls inside. Remove the secondary chain tensioners and pull out the camshaft position sensor bolt and sensor, making sure you don't hurt the camshaft's target wheel. Fitting only a crank gear or a cam gear is necessary, as rotating either gear by itself can result in damage. Undo the bolts holding the left and right camshaft sprockets, then, while supporting the left camshaft steel tube with 8428A, remove its sprocket, rotating the camshaft about 15 degrees clockwise so it is neutral. For the right camshaft, rotate it counterclockwise about 45 degrees so it is in neutral. With the idler sprocket assembly bolt removed, slide the entire assembly and the crank sprocket toward the bulk of the wheel to pull out both chains at once. In addition, remove both the pivoting tensioner arms and chain guides, after which you can take out the primary chain tensioner.
