The Timing Chain in Jeep Liberty models is responsible for maintaining the proper operation of Jeep Liberty vehicle in terms of synchronization of the rotation of the camshaft and the crankshaft thus DES ensuring proper valve timing for better performance of the vehicle engine. Located near the front of the Engine, the timing chain is a chain that transmits the power to the Engine Crankshaft and it demands lubrication to perform effectively and are commonly seen in cars with higher displacement. While metal timing chains are more popular today than rubber timing belts since the beginning of the 1990's, primarily because they do not need replacing as often, and are highly durable. Though the Jeep Liberty features a metal Timing Chain in its operation, certain problems arise because of lack of oil or tensioner and chain guides, one will hear a rattle coming from the front of the engine. As for the pushrod engines, a short chain drive is utilized instead of the gear drives due to the low noise and low wear factors and therefore is an ideal choice for the Jeep Liberty vehicle.

Jeep Liberty Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Timing Chain on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
Compress the piston attached to the secondary chain tensioner until it is touching the body of the tensioner, using a vise. Open the ratchet pawl by pulling on it with a screwdriver which should be done through the access hole on the tensioner. While keeping the pawl back, place the ratchet device 2 mm away from where the tensioner looks like it is connected. Attach the tensioner pin 8514 (3) to the front hole in the tensioner and open the vise gently as the piston spring presses agains the lock pin. Rest the main chain tensioner above the oil pump, fit bolts in the bottom two holes of the tensioner bracket and turn them until they reach 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Mount the right side tensioner arm using a Torx(R) screw, tightening it to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.,) and then install the left side guide with bolts tightened to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Complete installation of the left side chain tensioner, holding it on with a Torx(R) bolt and tightening it up to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) and then finish securing the right side chain guide also with a Torx(R) bolt, but to the same tightness of 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Fit the secondary chains to the idler sprocket so that you can see the metal on both plated links through the lower openings (at 4 and 8 o'clock). Line up the secondary camshaft chain holder 8429 (1) to hold the chains securely, insert the primary chain double plated link at the 12 o'clock mark on the idler sprocket and slide the single plated link to the 6 o'clock spot on the crankshaft sprocket. Brush engine oil all over the idler shaft and bushings, then use a block to hold the idler in place and time it to the counterbalance shaft drive gear. Place the chains, crankshaft sprocket and idler sprocket together and direct both secondary chains into the openings on the block and cylinder head. Tension the chains using an elastic strap. Place the timing marks on both gears together, then make sure the idler sprocket is fully set in place. Oil the washer and bolt of the idler sprocket, fit the assembly into place and tighten the bolt to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.) after rotating the camshaft a little for installation. Move the "L" symbol on the left camshaft sprocket over the chain's link and do the same thing for the "R" on the right camshaft sprocket, keeping in mind to remove extra oil from the mounting bolt so things don't get tightened. Take off the secondary camshaft chain holder 8429, connect the sprockets to the camshafts and set the sprocket bolts in place when you have them where they should be, but don't tighten them yet. All join pins should be lined up with the marks on the sprockets, "V6" marks on the camshaft sprockets should be at the top (12 o'clock position) and make sure the piece between the chain tensioner and block is in the right spot. Mount the secondary chain tensioners and tighten their bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.), since left and right secondary chain tensioners aren't standard on many vehicles. Unscrew the three locking pins from all the tensioners to make sure you do not overtighten the chains. Position adaptor pins 8346 under spanner wrench 6958 (4) and then tighten the left camshaft sprocket bolt (2) and the right camshaft sprocket bolt (3) to 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.) using the torque wrench. Once the engine has been rotated two complete revolutions, you should confirm the timing marks, with the primary chain idler sprocket dot at 12 o'clock, the primary chain crankshaft sprocket dot at 6 o'clock, the two "V6" marks on the secondary chain camshaft sprockets at 12 o'clock and the counter-balancer shaft drive gear dot, aligned to the idler sprocket gear dot. Apply engine oil to both outer chains and to both inner chains, test the play of the idler gear (1) and replace if the play is not in the 0.10 - 0.25 mm (0.004 - 0.010 in.) range. After the timing chain cover and the crankshaft damper, mount the cylinder head covers, then install the big threaded access plug into the right cylinder head, coating its thread with Mopar(R) Thread Sealant with Teflon. After that, tighten it to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.). Take care to place the oil fill housing, install the access plug in the left cylinder head (2) and add the Power Steering Pump. After that, fill the cooling system and link the negative lead of the battery.
