2010 Dodge Caliber Piston Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace a Piston and Connecting Rod Assembly on 2010 Dodge Caliber?
A: Prior to changing the piston and connecting rod assembly, drain out the engine oil. Service for pistons, rings and rods occurs as a complete unit and only a single, three or four can be changed for the engine balance to be maintained; choosing two will make the engine out of balance. Then, remove the engine and put it on the right kind of stand. The oil pan and cylinder head should be eliminated and the next step is the oil filter and balance shaft assembly. Next, get rid of the ladder frame, while always cleaning the carbon and dirt from the cylinder to keep the piston skirts from getting scratched. Drill off the ridges of the cylinder barrels prior to lifting out the pistons, keeping the piston's top surfaces covered during the process. Turn the crankshaft so that each connecting rod is properly placed in the cylinder bore, then write the cylinder's number on each connecting rod cap with an ink or paint marker instead of a stamp or punch to prevent any damage. Pull out the connecting rod bolts and cap after removing the gasket from the top of the cylinder, since these bolts are only good for one use and avoid harming the oil jets when removing pistons and rods from turbocharged engines. With care, slide the piston-rod combination straight out of the cylinder, replace the bearing cap onto the matching rod and follow this for all the piston-rod assemblies.
