Chrysler Concorde A/C Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace an A/C Clutch on Chrysler Concorde?
    A:
First, turn off the A/C to separate the battery negative cable and then eliminate the serpentine Drive Belt. Disconnect the compressor clutch coil wire harness connector and loosen the bolts holding the compressor to the mounting bracket. Then, take the compressor out of the bracket and hold it in the engine compartment. With a removing band for oil filters, take out the compressor shaft bolt and pound the plate in place with a plastic hammer, taking out the clutch plate and any shims. Do not use screwdrivers on the part that holds the clutch plate assembly and the pulley or you could damage it. After that, take out the pulley retaining snap ring with Snap Ring Pliers (C-4574) and simply slide the pulley assembly away from the compressor. Remove the ground clip screw and coil wire bracket/harness and after that, use a snap ring to take off the field coil from the compressor housing. Set the pin at the back of the field coil into the hole on the compressor end housing, line up the field coil, route the lead wires carefully, then lock the diode and bracket in place using the retaining screw. With Snap Ring Pliers (C-4574), put the field coil retaining snap ring in place and take care to have it seated correctly, so that its bevel side is outward and both eyelets are placed right. Install the pulley group on the compressor and tap it into place using a piece of wood if needed, securing it with the retaining snap ring, so that the bevel side sticks out. If you are using the original front plate and pulley assembly, the old shim(s) can be applied; otherwise, put two or three 2.54 mm (0.10 in.) shims between the shaft and shoulder. If a new front plate and pulley assembly is put on, measure the gap between them after clutch energization; the reading should be 0.35 - 0.65 mm (0.014 - 0.026 in.) and shims should be adjusted as required. Following this, secure the compressor shaft bolt after setting the torque to 17.5 ± 2 Nm (155 ± 20 in. lbs.), look at the air gap in many areas and spin the pulley one last time for accuracy.
  • Q: How to Ensure Proper Functioning After Installing a New A/C Clutch on Chrysler Concorde?
    A:
After attaching a new A/C compressor clutch, use the A/C clutch for 5 seconds ON followed by 5 seconds OFF for 20 cycles. Let the system run on A/C while you maintain engine rpm between 1500 and 2000 and activate high blower speed to burrow the friction elements into the clutch and increase its capacity to carry torque. Exceeding the proper clutch gap on the car may cause the clutch to slip or not engage correctly.
