Should the Clock Spring be faulty or if after the driver
Air Bag has been deployed, it should be changed because it cannot be fixed. Begin the process by taking off the negative battery cable to turn off the supplemental restraint system and wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge. Make sure that the
Steering Wheel is placed straight until the tires are pointing straight ahead. Begin by taking off the negative battery cable, removing the driver side air bag and make sure you don't turn an intact air bag face down on a hard object. Gently unscrew the tapered bolt holding the steering wheel with a suitable tool and then remove the steering wheel. After that, get rid of the two screws attaching the Clock Spring to the
Steering Column upper housing and take out the Clock Spring, splitting it from the steering angle sensor. Should you use the old Clock Spring, attach the rotor to the case and leave it in place until it is installed again; if you don't reuse it, re-center it just before installing. Set the steering angle sensor on the Clock Spring at the same alignment points found on the housings. Should the Clock Spring be reused, thoroughly remove any mounting tools used to keep it where it should be. Mount the Clock Spring on the steering column and then attach it with the two screws. While doing so, don't tighten the screws more than 1 N.m (9 in.lbs.). Install the steering wheel using the tapered bolt first and afterward put the driver air bag and screws onto the steering wheel. Wait to link the negative battery cable again until you have finished the test after working on any part of the Supplemental Restraint System.
