Chrysler Prowler Brake Disc Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What Precautions Are Necessary When Machining the Front Brake Disc on Chrysler Prowler?
    A:
Because the rear discs on this car are made with a hard aluminum silica carbide alloy, only the front ones can be machined, as doing so to the rear ones would harm the braking surface and make them useless. A rear disc that needs machining must be mended with a new part. Because the front brake disc is very sensitive, one must be careful when servicing it. If the disc has many deep grooves, is warped or causes problems like brake roughness or pedal pulsation, either reface the disc with a hub-mounted on-car brake lathe or replace the disc entirely. Using a hub-mounted on-car brake lathe will keep runout at a minimum because it corrects the brake disc to match the vehicle's hub and bearing. A minimum thickness mark is engraved on every front brake disc where it was not machined at the factory, letting users know what thickness not to remove. The disc should never be machined to a thickness less than this. Ensure both the brake disc face and all hub adapters are free from rust, chips or debris prior to installation. During use of the brake lathe, stick to the equipment's user manual and machine both sides of the disc simultaneously to avoid any cuts that are off balance. In disc refacing, the proper Total Indicator Reading and thickness limits must be kept, so disc turning equipment requires careful operation.
  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Front Brake Disc on Chrysler Prowler?
    A:
Raise the car, remove the center cap with a trim stick and then take out the front brake disc. Remove the wheel and tire afterwards and with those out, remove the 2 bolts that anchor the disc Brake Caliper to the caliper adapter. Turn the caliper so that the free end is not near the adapter and move the other end out from below the machined abutment. Tie the top of the caliper to the upper control arm using a plastic tie so the brake hose is not damaged. Once the caliper is supported, pop the disc from the wheel hub. After cleaning up the mounting area on the hub flange, prepare a new disc by removing any protective finishing from its surface. Put the disc on the hub and coat both cavity lips on the caliper adapter with Mopar Brake Grease. Set the caliper and brake shoes on the adapter, taking care not to harm the seals on the caliper guide pin bushings and fit the caliper to the disc using the bolts, tightening them to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Reattach the wheel and tire and with a torque wrench hand tighten the wheel mounting stud nuts in the right order up to half of the specified tightening force. Then tighten them all the way to the right force using the torque wrench at 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). After all, install the wheel center cap, lower the vehicle and pump the brake pedal several times before moving the car.
