Begin by disconnecting the negative
Battery Cable, lifting the car on a hoist, removing the wheel on the side when the belt runs and then removing the splash shield. After that, take off the accessory
Drive Belts and, using a wrench, free up the
Crankshaft damper, release the AC/Generator
Belt Tensioner and detach all the generator connections to get rid of both the generator and the bracket. First remove the upper and lower timing belt covers, then take off the coolant recovery container, move to the right
Engine Mount and end by removing the engine support bracket. Keep rotating the crankshaft until you see the TDC mark on the oil pump housing and the mark on the crankshaft sprocket are in line, with the trailing edge of the tooth of the sprocket aligned. Remove the lock bolt from the timing belt tensioner, put the 6 mm Allen wrench into the circle under the tensioner and turn the top plate clockwise to relax the timing belt. Should the belt be damaged by incorrect tracking, swap the whole belt tensioner pulley and bracket assembly instead. To change the camshaft sprockets, first hold each one while removing the center bolts using Special Tool 6847. For the crankshaft sprocket, use Special Tools 6793 and put in C-4685-C2. A timing belt that has contaminants on it should be replaced; do not try to clean it. Clean each sprocket with the right type of solvent and get rid of debris in its grooves. Place Special Tool 6792 under the crankshaft sprocket and check its depth. Only then install the timing belt and reattach the negative cable to the battery. grip the camshaft sprockets with Special Tool 6847 as you tighten the center bolts to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). After, place the timing belt in position and reconnect the negative battery cable. Make sure that crankshaft sprocket is at true top dead center and right beneath the arrow and then move the exhaust camshaft one half notch faster than the intake camshaft and make certain the arrows on both cams are pointing up. Place the timing belt in line and begin over the crankshaft, move it over the water pump sprocket, idler pulley and around the camshaft sprockets before reaching the tensioner. Turn the sprocket on the exhaust camshaft counterclockwise to line up the marks and tighten up the belt. Move the top belt tensioner plate counterclockwise to place the setting notch against the spring tang, then tighten the lock bolt to a torque of 25 Nm (220 in. lbs.). Spin the crankshaft two full turns to the right after tightening the belt, to make sure the timing marks are positioned correctly. Review the tolerance for the tang; if it goes beyond, redo the tension process. After everything is put back in place, install the engine mount support bracket, both timing belt covers (torque the bolts to 6 Nm (50 in. lb.)), the generator and bracket and belt tensioner, crankshaft damper and AC/Generator belt. Attach the right engine mount, connect the recovery container for coolant, the accessory drive belts, the belt shield and the belt-splash guard, race the right front wheel, then reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
