Dodge Avenger Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Install a Tie Rod End and Travel Restrictor for Steering Gear Service on Dodge Avenger?
    A:
Once you have the travel restrictor, match the color and thickness of the one you took off, because the thickness is not always the same from one side to the other. Make sure the flat part of the teeth is facing out on the inner tie rod ball joint before installing the travel restrictor. An O-ring or equivalent should be used to seal the space inside the inner rod, while using the Mopar(R) Lock AND Seal Adhesive or equivalent medium thread locker adhesive to the inboard end threads of the inner tie rod. Attach an inner tie rod installation tool or a crows foot wrench to the hex and tighten the inner tie rod onto the gear to a torque of 78 Nm (58 ft. lbs.). Place a new clamp loosely on the bellows near the big end and move everything over the inner tie rod and onto the gear body. Slide the small end of the bellows past the machined groove in the inner tie rod and apply a small amount of Mopar(R) Lubriplate or an alternative lubricant to the groove in the shaft to make toe adjustment easier. Draw the little end of the bellows away from the pipe until the inside ridge fits into the groove and immediately add a new clamp on the little end. Now use crimping pliers on the big clamp to secure the bellows to the gear assembly. If the inner tie rod is correct, cover the steering gear with a heat shield, secure the front steering assembly with screws and push-pins and adjust the screws to 6 Nm (53 in. lbs.). Install the tie rod jam nut on the inner tie rod far enough for the outer tie rod to be threaded on after that.
