To fit the crankshaft, be sure that the main bearings are of the right size. Mount the crankshaft upper main bearings into the cylinder block and make the oil hole alignments match. Put the crankshaft in place inside the cylinder block, then push it as far as it goes. Coat and set the front thrust washer straight on the machined shelf located between the No. 2 upper main bulkhead and the crankshaft thrust surface. Pull the crankshaft rearward as far as it will go, lubricate it and set in the rear thrust washer as you did the front one. Gently place the main bearings into the caps, smear them with clean engine oil and grease the center bolts before installation. Put on all the main bearing caps, then run your fingers over the inner bolts to tighten them, leaving the #2 main bearing cap central over the inner bolt holes so it does not touch the crankshaft counterweights. Turn the inner bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) and press the crankshaft forward so it sits nicely against the thrust bearing. Check that a 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) shim fits easily at both the front and rear caps, leaving no gaps between the #2 cap and the crankshaft. If you measure the clearance as less than 0.25 millimeters (0.010 inches), move the #2 bearing cap so the minimum clearance is achieved. After making sure everything fits, tighten the main bearing cap inner bolts another 90° with the bolt tool. Check end play on the crankshaft, then put the connecting rods in place and measure the side clearance where needed. You need to tighten the main cap bolts in the order of inner main cap bolts, windage tray bolts and main cap tie bolts. Screw in the windage tray, grease the extra bolts and tighten all bolts by hand into place. After putting the oil pickup tube in place, close the bolt firmly to 28 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) and then tighten the main cap tie bolts. After that, place the rear crankshaft oil seal retainer and oil seal and next insert the oil pump assembly. Once you've installed the dowel pin, continue by putting the crankshaft sprocket,
Timing Belt and tensioner in place. Stick the front timing belt cover to the engine block and fasten the
Oil Pan, after which the engine may be installed. After everything else, ensure the engine cylinders are properly filled with oil.
