The purpose of the Dodge Dakota A/C Compressor Clutch is to connect engine power to the air-conditioning compressor only when cooling is required.     How to Remove and Replace an A/C Compressor Clutch on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
    Unscrew the negative Battery Cable before you try to remove the compressor clutch and put a new one on. After that, take out the accessory Drive Belt. Remove the engine cable wire harness from the compressor clutch field coil connector at the very top of the A/C compressor. Unscrew the bolts that keep the A/C compressor in place on the engine and hold the compressor as you release it. Release both the clutch field coil connector and the wire lead from their position on the connector bracket. Before taking out the shaft bolt, secure the clutch plate by holding it with a band-type wrench or strap wrench. Be sure not to lift up the clutch plate from the pulley and bearing assembly, so you don't damage it and keep all the clutch shims together during disassembly, as they can likely be reused later. Hit the clutch plate gently with a plastic mallet to take it off the splines and once it comes loose, pull out both the clutch plate and shim(s). Grasping the snap ring with special pliers, pull it out so that the pulley and bearing can be easily removed from the A/C compressor. Use Snap Ring Pliers 9764 or a similar tool again to pull out the snap ring securing the clutch field coil to the front of the A/C compressor, then take out the field coil.

    How to Install an A/C Compressor Clutch on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
    Set the hole in the A/C compressor front against the dowel pin on the back of the clutch coil, connecting the coil to the compressor without pinching the wire lead. Make sure the bevel side is facing outward and the eyelets are on the right or left side as you set a new snap ring around the A/C clutch coil dowel pin hole. With the snap ring pliers, you can insert the clip that holds the A/C clutch coil into place. Carefully join the pulley and bearing when fitting them to avoid contact between the friction surfaces which can cause the clutch to fail before its time. Tighten the pulley and bearing assembly to the front of the A/C compressor or gently tap it with a block of wood if it is difficult. Remember to put a new snap ring on the pulley and bearing assembly, so the bevel part is facing outside. Again, place the A/C Snap Ring Pliers 9764 around the assembled pulley and bearing, pushing the ring so it's fully inside the groove. Should you choose to use the old clutch plate and pulley and bearing assembly, put the old shim(s) onto the compressor shaft; otherwise, mount two 2.54 mm thick shims onto the compressor shaft. Check the air gap several times after applying tension, turning the pulley once more before making the final check. If your clutch plate is recessed, measure the gap with a 90° wire gauge. If your clutch plate stands up more, measure the gap with a blade type feeler gauge and make any shim adjustments to reach the ideal 0.35 - 0.60 mm. Thread the A/C clutch coil wire behind the bracket and then attach the connector to the bracket. If you are removing the A/C compressor, set it on the engine and put in the retaining bolts. Bring the engine wire harness to the A/C clutch coil connector, install the accessory Drive Belt and then reconnect the negative Battery Cable.
