Dodge Intrepid Air Bag Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain an Air Bag in Your Seat on Dodge Intrepid?
    A:
Before servicing the seat air bag, move the front seat all the way forward and disconnect the negative battery cable remote terminal. After two minutes, the reserve capacitor will be discharged. Open the back of the seat by removing the plastic back panel and pulling off the J-strap connecting the seat back trim cover to the seat's top, bottom and air bag side. Raise the trim cover and cushion above the seat back frame so you can get to the seat air bag under the upper seat back foam. Push the two side retaining tabs down and then pull the connector straight from the air bag after sliding the yellow locking tab down. Pull out the side air bag retaining nuts, separate the air bag studs from the nylon sleeve and slide the air bag out, because tearing the sleeve will affect its function. To install the seat air bag, place it inside the nylon sleeve so the mounting studs fit into the sleeve holes and then only install the retaining nuts after checking the air bag is inside the nylon sleeve, tightening them to 10.7 ± 1 Nm (94.7 in. lbs.). Make sure the yellow locking tab on the side air bag electrical connector is snapped up into the "LOCKED" position before connecting it. After that, reinstall the seat back trim cover and fit the J-straps onto the section above and below the seat back frame, as well as on the air bag side. When adding the plastic back panel, always make sure you are replacing old push pins with new ones, especially at the top. Be sure to connect the remote terminal of the battery negative cable after the air bag system has been assessed.
  • Q: How to Safely Remove and Install an Air Bag on Dodge Intrepid?
    A:
Before taking out a non-deployed passenger air bag, first unlock the remote battery post by taking out the negative Battery Cable from its post on the instrument panel. Unscrew the four screws that hold the glove box door in place and take out the right instrument panel endcap afterward. Should the vehicle have a center console, start by removing the screw from the gearshift handle, the gearshift handle itself, the console shifter bezel and finally the side panel on the right console. Pull open the glove box door to take out five screws holding the glove box cover. After that, remove both A-pillar trim moldings, the left instrument panel endcap and the left lower instrument panel trim, unplugging the hood release cable and decklid release electrical connector. Take out the left knee blocker, as well as the instrument panel center bezel and disconnect the heater - A/C control module and traction control switch electrical links if installed. To get at the fuse box, first unmute the radio; if there is a console, remove the left side cover from the instrument panel; if no console, open the bin under the center pile of instruments. Take out the centre instrument panel (dome) lower nuts, the driver's air distribution system ducts and unplug the brake switch electrical connection. Unscrew the connector mount for the bulkhead and do not remove it, then unplug both the Occupant Restraint Controller and the two center instrument panel ground eyes from below the floor tunnel on the left. Unbolt the four nuts on the steering column, then take out the six bolts that connect the left instrument panel to the car, unplug the harness for the instruments panel to the car and unplug the radio antenna connector. Take out three lower and three upper right instrument panel mounting bolts and then pull the panel back at the passenger side to access the air bag module. On the right, remove four screws from the demister duct, two from the distribution duct assembly, connect the yellow wire harness to the air bag assembly and remove the three christmas tree fasteners. Detach the right and left front pencil struts from the air bag bolts, remove the instrument panel wire harness from the air bag reinforcement bracket and unscrew the four 10 mm hex head screws from the deployment door reinforcement. Once more, loosen five screws from the passenger air bag assembly to the retainer and lift the assembly out of the instrument panel retainer. To dispose of a deployed air bag, break the negative battery connection, shift or fold the air bag so it faces the instrument panel and tape the torn instrument panel pad over the deployed air bag until you pull out the instrument panel and its pad. First, screw the air bag in place on the instrument panel and then bolt the air bag reinforcement brace in place using four screws. Lift the instrument panel wiring harness into place on the air bag reinforcement bracket, insert the pencil strut at each passenger air bag screw and attach the yellow wire harness to the air bag assembly. After that, reinstall the correct distribution duct and demister duct and then lift the instrument panel assembly onto the dash panel and hold it using the right mounting bolts. Attach the two electrical connectors at the radio and the instrument panel, plus the connector at the brake switch, then fit the left and right A-pillar trim moldings, the glove box door and any console components you have. For modules deployed in a crash, install the working parts in a new instrument panel and pad assembly, fix them with screws and follow the standard air bag installation instructions.
