Before taking out a non-deployed passenger air bag, first unlock the remote battery post by taking out the negative
Battery Cable from its post on the instrument panel. Unscrew the four screws that hold the glove box door in place and take out the right instrument panel endcap afterward. Should the vehicle have a center console, start by removing the screw from the gearshift handle, the gearshift handle itself, the console shifter bezel and finally the side panel on the right console. Pull open the glove box door to take out five screws holding the glove box cover. After that, remove both A-pillar trim moldings, the left instrument panel endcap and the left lower instrument panel trim, unplugging the hood release cable and decklid release electrical connector. Take out the left knee blocker, as well as the instrument panel center bezel and disconnect the heater - A/C control module and traction control switch electrical links if installed. To get at the fuse box, first unmute the radio; if there is a console, remove the left side cover from the instrument panel; if no console, open the bin under the center pile of instruments. Take out the centre instrument panel (dome) lower nuts, the driver's air distribution system ducts and unplug the brake switch electrical connection. Unscrew the connector mount for the bulkhead and do not remove it, then unplug both the Occupant Restraint Controller and the two center instrument panel ground eyes from below the floor tunnel on the left. Unbolt the four nuts on the steering column, then take out the six bolts that connect the left instrument panel to the car, unplug the harness for the instruments panel to the car and unplug the radio antenna connector. Take out three lower and three upper right instrument panel mounting bolts and then pull the panel back at the passenger side to access the air bag module. On the right, remove four screws from the demister duct, two from the distribution duct assembly, connect the yellow wire harness to the air bag assembly and remove the three christmas tree fasteners. Detach the right and left front pencil struts from the air bag bolts, remove the instrument panel wire harness from the air bag reinforcement bracket and unscrew the four 10 mm hex head screws from the deployment door reinforcement. Once more, loosen five screws from the passenger air bag assembly to the retainer and lift the assembly out of the instrument panel retainer. To dispose of a deployed air bag, break the negative battery connection, shift or fold the air bag so it faces the instrument panel and tape the torn instrument panel pad over the deployed air bag until you pull out the instrument panel and its pad. First, screw the air bag in place on the instrument panel and then bolt the air bag reinforcement brace in place using four screws. Lift the instrument panel wiring harness into place on the air bag reinforcement bracket, insert the pencil strut at each passenger air bag screw and attach the yellow wire harness to the air bag assembly. After that, reinstall the correct distribution duct and demister duct and then lift the instrument panel assembly onto the dash panel and hold it using the right mounting bolts. Attach the two electrical connectors at the radio and the instrument panel, plus the connector at the brake switch, then fit the left and right A-pillar trim moldings, the glove box door and any console components you have. For modules deployed in a crash, install the working parts in a new instrument panel and pad assembly, fix them with screws and follow the standard air bag installation instructions.
