Dodge Neon Lash Adjuster Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair a Lash Adjuster and Rocker Arm Assembly on Dodge Neon?
    A:
Before servicing or repairing the Rocker Arm and hydraulic lash adjuster assembly, remove the cylinder head cover and look for the rocker arm shaft assembly. Relax the screws connecting them and carefully pull the rocker arm shafts from the cylinder head. Before dissassembling, pay attention to the rocker arm spacers and their retainers. Remove the bolts from the shaft to get the rocker arms apart. Detach the rocker arms and spacers from the shaft while putting them aside in the same order they were attached before, so they go back on properly. Examine the rocker arms to check for scorching, wear on the roller or damage and take out and replace if anything is wrong. Examine the places where the shafts are mounted to see if wear or damage is visible and replace them if things look wrong. Because the rocker arm shaft transmits oil, make sure the oil duct holes are not blocked and remove any clogs that exist. Prior to installing the rocker arm shafts, move the Crankshaft forward 3 notches from Top Dead Center. Wet the rocker arms and spacers first, then insert them into the same locations as before. The adjusters in the rocker arm/hydraulic lash adjuster assembly should already be filled with oil during installation, as evidenced by a short distance the plunger travels up. If the lash adjuster moves up too much, dunk the rocker arm assembly in oil and pump the plunger; if it fails to reduce the travel, then replace the assembly. Secure the rocker arm and shafts so that the notch in the shafts is upward and toward the Timing Belt area and replace the retainers where they originally went on the exhaust and intake shafts. Make sure the plastic spacers are not pushing against the spark plug tubes when you insert the intake rocker arm shaft; if they do, just rotate the plastic spacers instead of trying to push the shaft assembly down. Ensure the swivel feet are still there on the hydraulic head adjuster and after tightening the bolts to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.) in the recommended order, carefully place the cylinder head cover.
