Dodge Ram 3500 A/C Accumulator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove an A/C Accumulator on Dodge Ram 3500?
    A:
Before you remove the A/C accumulator, disconnect the negative Battery Cable and remove the refrigerant from the system. Remove the air filter housing cover so you can get to the A/C accumulator (9). Separate the secondary retaining clip (11) from the spring-lock coupler (1) on the A/C suction line (10) to the accumulator outlet tube (2). With A/C Line Disconnect Tools 7193 or similar, take out the accumulator and then remove and discard the O-ring seals. If available, pull the push-pin safety lock piece off the plastic bracket where the A/C accumulator's wire harness is held underneath the valve cover. Use a wrench to turn (8) the bolts that join the A/C accumulator to the (7) bracket in the dashboard. Unclip the secondary fastening pin (4) from the spring-lock coupler (6) on the accumulator inlet tube (3) heading to the evaporator outlet tube (5). Again, with a proper A/C disconnect tool (Special Tool Kit 7193 or its equivalent), remove the tube from the evaporator to the accumulator and discard both the tube's O-ring seals. Then, cover the open areas of the refrigerant system with plugs, just like before and if the accumulator needs replacing, remove both its mounting bolts and the bracket, if the model has one.
  • Q: How to service an A/C Accumulator on Dodge Ram 3500?
    A:
Before starting on the HVAC accumulator, first disconnect the battery negative cable and recover all of the refrigerant from inside the system. Open the air filter housing to disconnect the accumulator and loose the clip securing the suction line to the accumulator tube. To detach the suction line from the accumulator outlet tube using an A/C line disconnect tool, throw out the O-ring from the fitting. After marking, seal the opens suction line and accumulator outlet tube fitting with either tape or rubber stoppers. Relax the bolts that keep the accumulator attached to the dash panel bracket and then pull the secondary clip off the spring-lock coupler that links the accumulator to the evaporator outlet tube. With the A/C line disconnect tool, remove the connection between the accumulator inlet tube and the evaporator outlet tube, pulling out and throwing away the O-ring. Insert plugs or tape into the opened tubes under the accumulator and remove the whole unit out of the engine area. When fitting a new accumulator, put 60 milliliters (2 fluid ounces) of the right refrigerant oil into the refrigerant system. Put the new accumulator over the dash panel bracket without attaching it. Drop the tape or plugs on the accumulator inlet tube and evaporator outlet tube, coat a new rubber O-ring seal with clean refrigerant oil and fit it over the accumulator inlet tube fitting, being sure it is the right O-ring for your R-134a system. Connect the accumulator's inlet tube fitting to the evaporator outlet tube and snap the secondary retaining clip onto the spring-lock coupler. Proceed to tighten the accumulator bracket bolts by 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.), after that remove the tape or plugs from the suction line fitting connection and accumulator outlet tube. Use clean oil to coat a rubber O-ring seal and set it in the fitting at the outlet end of the accumulator. Join the air line to the outlet end of the accumulator and install the spring-lock coupler ratchet by using the second retaining clip. Place back the air filter housing cover, reattach the negative Battery Cable, empty the refrigerant system and fill it with refrigerant.
