While exchanging the water pump, check the
Fan Blades and viscous fan drive closely, since vibration may have caused damage that should be fixed. Removing a water pump is safe on models with air conditioning and all engines use a reversed rotating pump which is easy to recognize by the letter R on the back of the impeller. The water pump impeller is attached to the rear of the pump shaft and bearing assembly and the pump is only opened for service as one fully assembled unit. Removing the water pump from a 2.5L engine requires first disconnecting the negative battery terminal, draining the refrigerant, removing the upper
Radiator hose, loosening the four fan hub-to-water pump pulley nuts without removing them and finally removing the accessory
Drive Belt. If your car has an electric cooling fan, remove its connector, unhook the fan shroud and take out the four nuts to get the fan and shroud out altogether. After you have removed the fan blade and viscous fan drive, be sure not to put the viscous fan drive horizontal when you store it. After that, unbolt the
Power Steering Pump and bracket, purge the water pump pipe of radiator and heater hoses and unscrew the four mounting bolts, reminding yourself that one of the bolts is longer than the rest before you remove the pump from the vehicle. Should you have to replace the pump, first remove the heater hose fitting, making sure to remember how it was fitted. When replacing a pump, join the heater hose pipe to the pump with Mopar Thread Sealant With Teflon, make certain the gasket mating surfaces are clean and closely inspect them for any signs of damage or erosion. With the gasket's silicone bead pointing toward the water pump, place it so it is dry and bolt it in tight to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.) torque as you turn the shaft by hand to check that it turns easily. After installing the radiator and heater hoses on the water pump, install and bolt the power steering pump and bracket, place the water pump pulley on the hub and fit the shroud and fan together, making sure the nuts have 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) torque. Tighten both upper shroud nuts to 4 Nm (31 inch lbs.), attach the electric fan connector if your engine has one and direct the accessory drive belt correctly to the pump. After tensioning the belt, set the accessory drive back in place, put the upper radiator hose into its mount, refill the cooling system by checking for leaks, link the battery negative cable to the ground and finally start the engine to watch for any further leaks.
